Towers and Tuscany!

That’s right, you thought the tower of Pisa was the only famous tower in Italy labelled a Unesco World Heritage Site? Well, in fact there are many more (although not as tipsy). Join us for a day traipsing through the Tuscan countryside, as we visit the jewels of this region: Pisa, Siena, and San Gimignano. The Leaning Tower of Pisa has earned the impressive title of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World. Siena is home to the first bank in Europe. San Gimignano holds the record for having had the most Medieval towers in Italy–14 currently, giving it the name “Little Manhattan.”

Pisa’s Leaning Tower might be one of the most visited sites in Italy, but it is definitely worth the visit. In the so-called Piazza of Miracles, the leaning tower is the only thing rising up in Medieval splendor–you will also have the chance to marvel at the massive cathedral and baptistery. Siena, a perfect but eclectic Tuscan gem, sits atop a hill, revelling in its artistic genius. San Gimignano, also a Unesco World Heritage Site, has its own distinctive look thanks to its 14 towering tours. In the Middle Ages, patrician families who controlled the town built a skyline of 72 tower residences, testifying to their wealth and power.

Suggested starting time: 08:30 am; 09:00 am  (Times may have to change slightly due to ticket availability)

Piazza del Campo

The main square in Siena, the unique slanted brick paving is very captivating. Here you will find all sorts of Sienese locals having a drink at one of the nearby bars, or sitting in the middle of the piazza having a picnic. It also hosts twice a year the Palio di Siena, a horse race that takes place around the piazza. If you are coming in July or August, be sure to try and catch it!

Piazza del Duomo

Piazza del Duomo

The Duomo of Siena is by far the highlight of the town. In fact, it might be the highlight of all of Tuscany. This church, built in the 13th century, blows the Duomo of Florence out of the water in terms of both grandeur and artistry. The floor inside is otherworldly, with the most elaborate decoration you will ever see.

Within the Duomo is the Piccolomini chapel. The Piccolomini family from Siena rose to prominence in 1458 when Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini was elected Pope Pius II. His nephew, who became Pope Pius III, had this chapel commissioned to chronicle the achievements of his uncle and himself.

This museum contains much of the original statuary from the Duomo itself. It also has some fantastic paintings by the famous 14th century painter Duccio. From here you can climb up to one of the most spectacular views in all of Siena!

San Gimignano

San Gimignano

San Gimignano is unlike any other city in Italy. It is a perfect example of what many of these medieval towns would have looked like. Filled with towers jutting up from the streets, a memento of the previous squabbling baronial families that warred amongst themselves in the medieval period. Each of these towers were built by rich families that wanted to outdo their rivals by having the tallest tower, to which they could retreat to when conflicts arose in the streets. At its peak of wealth and influence in the 14th century, San Gimignano had 70 towers, now only 13 remain. Still more than enough the give you an idea of life back then.
