Agrigento was founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century BCE. It was originally called Akragas, but got the name Agrigento from the Romans, who occupied the city as they did with all of Sicily once they rose to the height of their power. Agrigento was a formidable force in Sicily, as is evident from the magnificent temples that they constructed. What you see today is only a fraction of what once was there. It’s hard to even imagine. Lucky for you, you don’t have to leave too much to your imagination, because we reveal all the splendid things that Agrigento has to offer!

Stretching back all the way to the 6th century when Agrigento was founded, you will see some of the finest Greek temples in all the world. Whether its the Temple of Concord, Hera, or Zeus, the Valley of the Temples offers its visitors an experience unlike any other.
The town of Agrigento itself is quite lovely. Built up on the hill, you can see the Greek temples from the Valley of the Temples from most locations in the city. Whether you are enjoying a nice mean, wandering through the lovely narrow streets, or heading down to the beach, Agrigento has plenty to offer!
