Lively Culture near the Foothills of the Alps

If you are looking for the perfect getaway amidst stunning architecture, a shimmering lake, and the Alps, look no further! Zurich has everything you could ever hope for. Spend the day strolling by quaint shops and restaurants along Lake Zurich, followed by a trip to the Old Town, where you can enjoy grand buildings such as the Grossmunster church, and the Kunsthaus museum, which is Switzerland’s largest art museum. Finish the day off by ascending to Uetliberg, a mountain peak that affords a fantastic view of all that you just visited. All the while you will be just 40 km from the Swiss Alps!

Zurich’s early history goes back all the way to the Helvetii, a celtic people who lived along the Limmat river,  and famously warred against the Roman Empire and Julius Caesar. By 58 BCE, the Helvetii were conquered, and the city of Turicum was founded by the Romans as a trading outpost. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Zurich had its time as an independent state in the 12th, and it continued its rebellious streak in the 13th century, when it joined the Swiss federation in opposition to the Austrian Empire. Ever the contrarian, by the 16th century, Zurich was at the forefront of the Reformation, and played a huge part in Switzerland seceding from the Catholic Church. Now the city is a testament to its lively and enduring spirit, which is just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed!
