Belem Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands as a symbol of the Age of Discoveries. Originally built in the early 16th century as a fortified lighthouse to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbor, it later served as a customs checkpoint and prison. Its ornate Manueline architecture, featuring intricate carvings of maritime motifs and historical figures, makes it a captivating landmark reflecting Portugal’s rich maritime history.
Who doesn’t want to visit a castle perched atop a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean? In fact just about everyone does. There is evidence that this hilltop has been occupied since the 8th century BCE, and that fortifications of some kind have been there since 48 BCE, when the Romans were in control of the area. The castle you see today is much newer, but still incredibly old, it dates back to the 10th century!
This is definitely the most authentic area of Lisbon. It was throughout history a very rough and tumble area with a lot of poverty. Many of those who worked on the docks would live here, and as the town grew, so did the types of people that were moving to this area from all across the world. As a result, the Alfama district has become a melting pot of cultures, and thus is one of the most interesting areas in the city. The best food is here. The best artisanal shops are here as well. There is no better area to get a true taste of Lisbon!
The most popular square in the entire city. The paving all throughout the square is beautiful as it swirls along to the monumental column of Pedro IV. Filled with lovely cafes, and always bustling with locals and tourists alike, this 18th century should not be missed!
